Swearing off of Obsessive-Compulsive Link Blogging

I’ve recently realized (and you have probably noticed if you follow this blog) that I can no longer keep up with the kind of thoroughly obsessive-compulsive linkblogging that I managed to provide for about a year-and-a-half… which was a pretty insane thing to even attempt to provide in retrospect… it almost drove me mad! There is simply too much wonder and novelty out there to even attempt share it all with you anymore. It was a good run! Hope you will stay with me, nevertheless.

So, anyhow, my HEY! KIDS! COMICS! and Interesting Links posts will no longer provide enormous lists of things for you to check out… they will simply be links to occasional random things that I feel like blathering on about.

For those of you who check out my blog for the express purpose of checking out the huge lists of links that I am no longer providing… here is an opml file of the sites I currently subscribe to for comic scans. If you use this to subscribe to them all, you will get much the same thing as what I used to provide here in those posts. In addition, here are some individual links to RSS feeds (rather than the sites) for the blogs I have been regularly linking to. If you are not currently following blogs with a newsreader, you should really consider looking into it… I highly recommend Google Reader for this purpose.

INTERESTING LINKS: Pocket Cartoon Course at Scary Terry’s World & Good Time to Donate to The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library: June 17th, 2009

STWALLSKULL'S INTERESTING LINKS

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

On his Scary Terry’s World blog, cartoonist Terry Beatty has posted a wonderful little instructional booklet from 1943 called Pocket Cartoon Course. If you can identify the artist who drew it, he would like to know. Go check it out!

Terry has apparently been digging through his collections and plans on sharing more cool old stuff… like this great Nell Brinkley cartoon, for example.

ALSO OF NOTE:

Allan Holtz at the Stripper’s Guide blog notes that now is a very good time to give to The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, which, by all accounts, has the most fantastic collection of comic art in the world:

The Ohio State University’s Cartoon Research Library has been given a $1 million gift by Jeanne Schulz (widow of Charles) for the renovation of a desperately needed larger facility for their ever-expanding holdings. This is great news. Even better, though is that Jeanne has pledged up to another $2.5 million dollars in matching funds for other donations to the library. In other words, for every dollar you give, Jeanne will match it with a buck of her own. Everything you can afford to give will go twice as far!

Here is a video on the subject, with a glimpse at their incredible holdings:

What are you waiting for?

Read more about this opportunity on the Stripper’s Guide blog here.

INTERESTING LINKS: Mars Attacks! May 27th, 2009

STWALLSKULL'S INTERESTING LINKS

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

The Golden Age Comic Book Stories blog has posted some nice scans of the complete series of the notorious and gleefully gruesome Mars Attacks! cards painted by Norm Saunders and Bob Powell (the inspiration for the Tim Burton movie of the same name), as well as the roughs for the cards drawn by Wally Wood and Bob Powell.

INTERESTING LINKS: Scalia’s Privacy Invaded: May 5th, 2009

STWALLSKULL'S INTERESTING LINKS

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

Boing Boing had a post today about some brilliant students who, in reaction to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia questioning the need for more privacy protections, have provided Scalia with a 15-page dossier documenting his personal information.

His class turned in a 15-page dossier that included not only Scalia’s home address, home phone number and home value, but his food and movie preferences, his wife’s personal e-mail address and photos of his grandchildren, reports Above the Law.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone performed the same service for all the Supreme Court justices, congresspeople and senators? I imagine it would change a lot of minds about the necessity of legal privacy protection (at least for those in political office).

Pictured above, some guy on the left with Scalia on the right, in one of the numerous photos you can find of the ugly bastard on flickr… this one picked for it’s creative commons license which allows me the right to post it here. They are watching you, Mr. Scalia.

My good friends at Big Time Attic called my attention to this wonderful little animation of Chris Ware’s Quimby the Mouse set to music by Andrew Bird, apparently done for This American Life.

I’ve talked about the brilliant Patrick Smith before (here, here, and here), and he has a new game called WINDOSILL that is, of course, amazing and beautiful. Click the image to go there. Found courtesy of Boing Boing Offworld.

Another Smith was called to my attention courtesy of the Boing Boing media empire; here’s Kevin Smith’s hilarious story of how his Superman movie didn’t get made:

INTERESTING LINKS: Baby Secrets : April 24th, 2009

STWALLSKULL'S INTERESTING LINKS

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

The Vintage Ads community on LiveJournal linked to a hilarious and creepy toy ad for “Baby Laugh-A-Lot,” which you can go see here.

That reminded me of a hilariously creepy doll that I have down in my basement (which is the best place to keep such things, of course), that goes by the handle of Baby Secrets. I can only imagine how many nightmares were induced by this child’s toy… it probably would have set a record if Guinness could keep track of such things.

Our first Baby Secrets broke, but we loved her so much we actually bought a second one on Ebay. With the second one we realized Baby Secrets had a secret… she gives different messages when you press her hand than when you press her tummy (we hadn’t known about the hand trigger).

You too can horrify your friends with this treasure, thanks to Ebay. Doubt you’ll have to pay more than ten bucks for one any time soon, either.

It is also worth noting that when Baby Secrets “whispers,” you can hear her across the room… so don’t tell her anything you wouldn’t want everyone to know!

I decided to check and see if there were any ads for her out on the internet. Indeed there are some. Here they are for your viewing pleasure…

My good friends at Puny Entertainment have received two very well-deserved nominations for Webby awards for their brilliant work on the Yo Gabba Gabba! website (they also do most of the animation for the tv show). You should do yourself a favor and check out the website, get blown away, and then go vote for them! Yo Gabba Gabba! is in the “Television” and “Celebrity/Fan” categories.

TODAY’S INTERESTING LINK:

Underground cartoonist Skip Williamson (best known for Snappy Sammy Smoot) has one hell of an interesting blog at Salon.com (you can subscribe here). I believe the stories from it are at least partially from an autobiography he wrote or is in the process of writing, although that may not be the case. Note that Williamson has another blog called My Bitter Agenda here as well.
